Meet the Maker - The Little Wing

Introducing Jennifer Schumaker, owner/artist the little wing.

Jennifer creates and sells unique handmade children's toys and items. She says that "I love the idea of children having unique, handmade play items that will be treasured keepsakes for years to come. I use a mixture of new and vintage fabrics to create doll and animal friends, play accessories, and whimsical embroidery hoop art. Using vintage materials allows me to create art and keepsakes with their own inherent, built in history."

Jennifer previously worked for nearly 15 years in the Early Childhood Special Education field with children & families as part of a team in a Head Start organization.  She says: "My creativity took center stage when I finally decided to learn to use the sewing machine my grandma gave me years earlier. I will forever be grateful to her for this gift."

Each the little wing friend is one of a kind, just like all of us.  There are no reproductions here.

Jennifer's creative motto is imagine.create.handmade.

Jennifer's favorite quote on creativity is "I saw the angel in the marble & I carved until I set him free." - Michelangelo

Finally, Jennifer's famous last words are "Be Silly. Be Honest. Be Kind. - R.W.E."

What Is the Best Part of Summer?

What is the best part of summer?

The sun shine?

The pool side?

The beautiful warm weather?

Nope, it is the kids! Yep! The kids get to play and run outdoors learning about the world around them! Summer would not be complete without back yard camping trips, day trips to the zoo, a museum, or to play at the local park.

Here are a few of my favorite products to help you celebrate the KIDS in your life this summer!

Curtis the Teeny Friend by The Little Wing KC is a sweet hug-able friend to take along on one's summer adventures!
Wooden Toy Truck and Car by Creations by M and Jis a sturdy toy to help a little mind race through the fields or zoom on the local racetrack!
I Geek - a sock in my pocket doll by Kiser Krafts is a soft plush to bring a touch of geek into the world of a young scientist.
Mini Stuffed Monster - Liro by Lu and Ed  is a great plush to help complete a puzzle and enjoy a glass of lemon lime soda!
Ellie Mae checkered flowers pigtail clip set by Violet's Buds are a darling way to dress up your summer dress to the local square dance!

Thank you to Kelly Kiser from Kiser Krafts for creating this blog!

Ten must-have items for a kid's room

Gone are the days of mindlessly buying whatever hot new gadget is out there. These days, parents are investing more time into the why & how of products they bring into their - and their children's - lives. Why is this product better than the rest? How is it used & how long will it last? Our team of Kansas City makers rallied together to put together the top ten must-have items for a items room to bring parents the best in sustainable, educational & fun products for kids that are made ethically & locally!

Storage

Keep laundry off the bedroom floor & toys picked up in the play room with these fun Mon-stors from Lu & Ed! Each is handmade from carefully sourced textile discards & fabric donations, preventing landfill waste & making cleaning up fun for kids as they "feed" the Mon-stors their messes!

Contain those little Legos, art supplies or toy cars in these fabric bins by Life's Gems! They are handmade from textile discards, which prevents fabric from entering landfills, and come in various sizes for all of your toy storage needs!

Toys

Perfect for babies & toddlers, these fun crinkle blocks are visually stimulating while encouraging sensory play! Young learners can count the ribbons, name objects on the fabric, and learn to identify colors by name with Creations by M & J's handmade crinkle blocks!

The Little Wing makes adorable, one of a kind heirloom quality stuffed toys & dolls that are built to last & be passed down for generations to come.

Made entirely from socks (new, never worn), these cute sock bunnies encourage imaginative play! Kiser Krafts uses a variety of materials on each one of a kind bunny that are great for sensory play, from the hard button eyes to the soft pom pom tails & the lovingly embroidered noses.

These hand twisted bubble wands by Thyme 2 Dream are the epitome of summer magic! Buy several & fill a vase on the back porch with them - instant fun when friends come over to play!

Decor

Have a Pinterest worthy nursery by adding this gold foil clock from The Tulle Box to your baby's sweet room.

These mobiles from Life's Gems are handmade from paper scraps & are perfect dreamy accents to a room - available in a variety of colors, from rainbow (shown) to neutrals & cascading ombres, they can be hung over beds, in the corner or by a window to swirl in the breeze.

Violet's Buds offers a wide variety of handmade hoop art that she creates using fabric scraps & salvaged materials that makes wonderful centerpieces in a room - or hang several together for a statement wall!

These Rescued Robots by Remnants by RJ are created from metals that would otherwise be destined for a landfill. Not only do they make great nursery or kid's room decor, they make a great conversation starter for children about repurposing & recycling items!
