Handmade in KC Holiday Shopping List

My Handmade in KC Holiday Shopping List
by Laura of Handmade by Lolo Z

While I am one of those who don’t start shopping for Christmas gifts until MUCH closer to the big day, one can’t help but be very aware that the holiday shopping season is upon us!  Once again this year, I am working on making 2014 a Handmade & Local Holiday.  With a wide variety of people on my list (I am the oldest of 5 siblings, my husband the youngest of 5) buying handmade can be challenging but is always SO REWARDING!

So here in my Handmade in Kansas City Christmas Shopping List

The Kids – I have just shy of twenty kids between my daughters, nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews, and kids of very close friends to shop for.  Ages range from 2-20 and interest range is just as broad.  Luckily, the Handmade in KC artists are just as diverse as the little ones on my list!  Here are a few things that fit the bill!

I also have a slew of women folk that need gifts!  Between mom, mother-in-law, sisters, sisters –in-laws, adult nieces and my very best girl friends, there are about 15 females with 15 different styles and needs!  I found perfect gifts for each in these Handmade in KC member shops!

There are fewer men on my list, but I do have my husband, dads/in law, brothers/in laws!  But what do you know… I found perfect purchases for them, as well,  in some basic MALE gifting categories -  edible, sports related or Star Wars.

This post was originally going to be about WHY we should shop handmade and got derailed once I started visiting each of the pages for some pictures and the shopaholic inside took over.

So, the main point of all of this is that there are so many reasons for buying local and handmade, but FOR ME the best part of shopping for others is finding just the right gift that shows how special they are to you and there is no better way to do that than handmade!

Each item is as unique as the person for which it was purchased!
Clearly, if we look at the big picture, the most important reason why we should by handmade and local is simply that if we don’t support our small local businesses, they won’t be able to continue to exist.  Not to mention, you can build relationships with your local handmade sellers that you just can’t with large retail stores!  Every customer is vitally important to a small local handmade artisan – and they will treat you that way!  I love getting the handwritten notes, seeing special personal touches and just being remembered – your name, your favorites.

Finally, I love the emotional connection that comes with buying handmade… that indescribable feeling of knowing you have purchased something SPECIAL, something unique, something with love built right in to it.
Being a maker myself, I know the care and attention to detail that goes into making each item.
You aren’t just buying a THING – you are buying a tangible piece of that artist’s heart and soul.

I encourage each of you to visit the Events tab and check out some of the places that the Handmade in KC members will be in the next few months.  There are links to each of our shops on the Sellers tab.

Meet the Maker - by Wicked Red

Meet Amy Beth!  She is the brains and hands behind by Wicked Red, maker of gorgeous jewelry using vintage beads and her own line of hand-rolled paper beads.

Born and raised here in Kansas City, Amy Beth is a self-taught jewelry designer who started making stretch string necklaces and bracelets for friends and family ten years ago.  After working a day job for 21 years, the company was sold.  Her husband – who she describes as her biggest fan and supporter - knew she was creative, talented and hard-working, so he encouraged her to take the opportunity to make jewelry design a career.  She already had the perfect name, having used Wicked Red as a nickname derived from her hair color and the video game Evil Dead….a friend had suggested Evil Red but she thought Wicked seemed a little less scary! After adding a little “by” in front to distinguish the jewelry designer from a lingerie store of the same name and buying some beads, the business was born.

Looking at the by Wicked Red product lines, you will see a lot of unique and beautiful vintage beads.  Amy Beth has a little obsession with finding high quality glass beads…scouring eBay and other markets and discovering amazing beads, some uncirculated, others antique.

As any good business owner would, Amy Beth was looking for ways to expand her product line and began to make hand-rolled paper beads.  She researched thoroughly to find the best methods and gave it a whirl.  After the first batch made with a toothpick, she made a wise $5 investment in a paper quiller.  She has now made over 2000 beads in just a few months.  Not only are they unbelievably beautiful, but all are totally unique.

She meticulously cuts the paper before rolling them into shape, then glazing them for protection. There are beads made from sheet music, comic book paper, scrapbook paper, magazines and even some from fabric!  Although Amy Beth does still design jewelry, she is spending more time creating the beads and selling them to other jewelry makers and shipping them all over the world.

Amy Beth says she hopes her business will be forever evolving as she continues to try new methods and materials.  A learner at heart, she always wants to try something new and different.  Owning her own business has been a great learning experience, through the highs and lows of sales and getting to know other makers through groups, like Handmade by Kansas City.   She recognizes the importance of having a support system and loves how we are all learning from each other.  With the success of by Wicked Red’s handmade jewelry and the new line of hand-rolled paper beads, Amy Beth is excited for the future and whatever it brings.
